At this time, horse tackle was studded with decorative mounts and pendants: many were gilded, and it must have been a wonderful sight to see them glistening in the sun. Most metal detectorists selling on Ebay simply wrap the objects in cling film or bubble wrap but occasionally I have bought from old collections where the collector has made something beautiful out of each piece. This is the best one. All it needed was a few strands of horsehair to acknowledge where it had come from and I had a stand made for it. The vestigial gilding is quite extensive.
