A Roman medical or cosmetic scoop with a beautiful green patina and a hint of Egyptian influence in the shape of the flattened end. That started a train of thought leading to Egyptian burials. We made the base first and then I needed a lid and found a site which specialised in horn to decorate guitars. I sent off for some in their standard size and spookily when it arrived, it fitted EXACTLY. It felt very in keeping with the whole subject of Egyptian tombs.
This piece was one of the ten boxes I made for the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize in 2017- I was one of the finalists.
The base of the box is made from silver sheet, drilled out and filled with 9 carat gold nails made by heating the gold to make a ball and then flattening it to make a nail shape; they were then soldered in. The bezel that fits into the box is riveted to the horn and the scoop is attached with 18 carat gold.
Silver 925; 9 carat gold; 18 carat gold; horn; bronze Roman scoop.
